The Alliance Francaise was formed in Paris in 1883 by a community of notable French contributors to diplomacy, the sciences, and literary arts under Paul Cambon, Ferdinand de Lesseps, Louis Pasteur, Ernest Renan, Jules Verne, and Armand Colin, "Pour promouvoir le rayonnement de la civilization français à travers sa langue et sa culture."

Membership runs from September 1 - August 31 of each year.
